Protect your cargo in transit.

Cargo insurance can protect the value of your goods against covered loss or damage while they move through the supply chain.

Freight moves through many hands and environments between origin and destination. Appropriate cargo insurance adds financial protection when covered physical loss or damage occurs in transit.

Coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions and exclusions. The guide below explains common exclusions so you can understand where protection may not apply; your policy wording remains the authoritative source.

Coverage guide

Common exclusions.

These circumstances are generally excluded from coverage. Refer to your policy for the complete terms that apply to your shipment.

Willful misconduct and negligence
Loss, damage or expense attributable to willful misconduct of the insured or their employees. Unexplained disappearance of property from any vehicle owned, leased or operated by the insured. This includes theft of property from the vehicle as a result of the insured's vehicle being stolen due to negligence or theft of property from the vehicle either by the insured or employees of the insured.
Insolvency or financial default
Loss damage or expense caused by insolvency or financial default of the owners, managers, charterers, or operators of the vessel where, at the time of loading of the subject-matter insured on board the vessel, the Assured are aware, or in the ordinary course of business should be aware, that such insolvency or financial default could prevent the normal prosecution of the voyage.
Inherent vice or nature of the subject-matter insured
Loss, damage or expense caused by the inherent vice or nature of the insured property.
Unsuitable packing
Loss, damage or expense caused by insufficiency or unsuitability of packing or preparation of the insured shipments for the intended voyage when performed by the named insured or their employees.
Ordinary wear and tear
Loss, damage or expense caused by ordinary leakage, ordinary loss in weight or volume, or ordinary wear and tear of the subject-matter insured.
Delay
Loss of market, or damage or expense caused by delay, even though the delay may be caused by an insured risk.
Deliberate damage or destruction
Deliberate damage to, or deliberate destruction of, the subject matter.
Unseaworthiness of vessel, container or conveyance
Unseaworthiness or unfitness of vessel or craft for the safe carriage of the subject-matter insured, where the Assured are privy to such unseaworthiness or unfitness, at the time the subject-matter insured is loaded therein. Unfitness of container or conveyance for the safe carriage of the subject-matter insured, where loading therein or thereon is carried out prior to the attachment of this insurance, or by the Assured or their employees, and they are privy to such unfitness at the time of loading.

This shall not apply where the contract of insurance has been assigned to the party claiming hereunder who has bought or agreed to buy the subject matter insured in good faith under a binding contract. The Insurers waive any breach of the implied warranties of seaworthiness of the ship and fitness of the ship to carry the subject-matter insured to destination.
Acts of War
Loss, damage, or expense caused by war, civil war, revolution, rebellion, insurrection, or civil strife, arising therefrom, or any hostile act by or against a belligerent power. This includes capture, seizure, arrest, restraint or detainment, derelict mines, torpedoes, bombs, or other derelict weapons of war, and any use of atomic or nuclear weapons.
Strikes or Terrorism
Loss, damage, or expense caused by strikers, locked-out workmen, or persons taking part in labour disturbances, riots or civil commotions. This includes loss, damage, or expense due to strikes, lock-outs, labour disturbances, riots or civil commotions, and any acts of terrorism.
